Mia Toretto and Brian O’Conner break Dominic Toretto out of a bus that’s transporting him to Lompoc Prison, thus the trio escape from the authorities to Rio de Janeiro. When a job on a train goes sideways, this leads to Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs and his team moving down to Rio to take down Dom and company. Meanwhile, Dom and Brian assemble a crew to steal money from crime lord Hernan Reyes.
La Familia….assemble! Not in a millions years could anyone forsee that a Point Break remake with cars back in 2001, would end up becoming one of the most ridiculous and profitable franchises at the end of this decade and you primarily see the shift in tone here with Fast Five. Not only does it focus on its key characters from the original film, but it brings together an ensemble from the previous instalments in the franchise and makes them a diverse unit moving forward with further instalments. While certain characters have interacted previously, as a whole you can feel that the cast have a lot of fun bouncing off each other here and having the film focus primarily on the heist and the cat’n’mouse chase between them and Luke Hobbs, it feels the most polished of the Fast and Furious films and is a legitimate solid action film, moreso than being referred to as a guilty pleasure as the action set pieces are constructed very well, from the obvious final act heist, to the foot chase in the slums, to the ambush sequence in the middle act. As solid as the ensemble is (#JusticeForHan), the introduction of Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs is what makes this instalment standout from the rest, as he’s relentless in his pursuit of bringing Dom and company in, regardless of their innocence. It’s no surprise that the best instalments in the FF franchise are the ones that Justin Lin directed.
FAVOURITE SCENE: The climatic heist was the most ridiculous the franchise had done up to this point, but now it’s properly the most grounded and realistic in comparison to the sequels that followed, and that is saying something. Still an absolute thrill to watch.
FAVOURITE QUOTE: “Stay the fuck out of my way!” – Luke Hobbs
DID YOU KNOW: The role of Hobbs was originally envisioned for Tommy Lee Jones. According to Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson was brought into Fast Five, because of a fan suggestion from a girl named Jan Kelly, who said she would love to see the two work together on screen.
