TheWrap is exclusively reporting that Andy Serkis is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to play the role of Alfred Pennyworth in Matt Reeves’ upcoming feature The Batman.
Matt Reeves was brought on board the project back in February 2017, taking over the reigns of directing the film that Ben Affleck was originally set to direct based on a script he wrote with Geoff Johns. Since then, Reeves has been adapting the script for The Batman along with Ben Affleck, upon which Affleck revealed in January that he wouldn’t be reprising the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman for Reeves’ version.
Alfred Pennyworth is Bruce Wayne’s most faithful manservant and confidant throughout the history of DC comics as well as in the film and television adaptations. Alfred is also capable to handling himself due to his backstory of being a former military man.
Andy Serkis, who will be directing the upcoming Venom 2, has previously worked with Matt Reeves in the Planet of the Apes sequels (Dawn and War).
The Batman is scheduled for cinematic release on the 25th June 2021.
