The Suicide Squad: James Gunn In Talks To Direct DC Film Set For Summer 2021 Release

The Hollywood Reporter is exclusively reporting that James Gunn, who has been writing the script for the Suicide Squad sequel (now titled The Suicide Squad), is now in negotiations with Warner Bros. to direct the DC film that is now set for a summer 2021 release.

The 2016 film, directed by David Ayer, followed villains such as Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc, who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter sentences. While the film was met with mixed reception critically, it would end up making $745m worldwide on its $175m budget.

In September 2017 it was announced that Gavin O’Connor was attached to direct the sequel, but removed himself from the project as the Suicide Squad sequel had an identical plot to the upcoming Birds of Prey film. In October of last year it was reported that James Gunn, after his firing from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 that summer over tweets from 2008 and 2009 resurfaced in which he made insensitive and controversial jokes, was brought on board by Warner Bros. to write the script for the Suicide Squad sequel.

This THR report states that with the film being titled The Suicide Squad, it’s being labelled as a relaunch more than a direct sequel to the 2016 original, with sources saying that Gunn’s focus is to take the franchise in a new direction with a mostly all-new cast of characters and actors, whilst being rooted very much in Gunn’s vibe. Personally as long as they keep Will Smith’s Deadshot, Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang and Viola Davis’s Amanda Waller in the 2021 film, I’ll be happy to have them characters back in the mix.

The Suicide Squad is scheduled for cinematic release on the 6th August 2021.
