Cats: Rebel Wilson Joins Cast For Film Adaptation Of Musical

Deadline is exclusively reporting that Rebel Wilson is the latest name to join the cast of Working Title and Universal’s film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats.

The musical follows a tribe of cats called the Jellicles over the course of one night as they decide which of their group will ascend to the ‘Heaviside Layer’ and come back to a new life. The musical is the fourth-longest-running show in Broadway history and the sixth-longest-running in London’s West End.

Rebel Wilson (whose credits include How To Be Single and Pitch Perfect 3) will be playing the role of the old Gumbie cat Jennyanydots, who has a reputation for being lazy. In Cats lore she’s known to spend her days seeking out the warm and sunny spots where she sits, and sits, and sits, and sleeps as the hours tick by. But when the moon rises, she’s alive and bakes and fries, and teaches the mice “knitting, crocheting and tatting.” On top of that, she employs the cockroaches to be her troop of helpful boy scouts.

Rebel Wilson will be joining a cast that includes Jennifer HudsonTaylor SwiftJames CordenIan McKellenLaurie DavidsonMette TowleyIdris ElbaJudi DenchFrancesca Hayward and Steven McRae.

Tom Hooper (Les Misérables and The Danish Girl) will be directing the film and has been prepping the project for two years, with the aim now to commence shooting this Autumn in the UK. The film is adapted by Lee Hall.
