TheWrap is exclusively reporting that Warner Bros. and DC are in talks with Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn to pen the script and possibly direct the Suicide Squad sequel.
The 2016 film, directed by David Ayer, followed villains such as Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc, who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter sentences. While the film was met with mixed reception critically, it would end up making $745m worldwide on its $175m budget.
In September of last year it was announced that Gavin O’Connor was attached to direct the sequel, but according to the Variety report on this subject, as he removed himself from the project as the Suicide Squad sequel had an identical plot to the upcoming Birds of Prey film, and is instead directing a drama at Warner Bros. starring Ben Affleck.
The Suicide Squad film starred Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, Karen Fukuhara, Adam Beach, Ben Affleck and Jared Leto.
