Deadline is exclusively reporting that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell will be starring alongside Margot Robbie in the DC Films feature Birds of Prey, with the duo cast as Huntress and Black Canary.
The project, which has been long in development, as of yet has not had details of its overall plot released, but we do know recently that there was a shortlist of actresses in contention for the roles of Huntress, Black Canary and Rene Montoya (which is yet to be cast).
Mary Elizabeth Winstead (whose recent credits include Mercy Street and Fargo) will be playing the role of Helena Bertinelli aka Huntress, who has had many versions of the character at DC Comics, but the Birds of Prey version is a former mafia princess who was devastated at a young age when her family was killed in a mob hit, turning her into a vigilante and eventually leading her to join the Birds of Prey team. Jurnee Smollett-Bell (whose recent credits include Underground and Lovecraft Country) will be playing the role of Dinah Lance aka Black Canary, who is a good-natured and idealistic streetfighter in the comics who is known for her Canary Cry. Both these characters have had recent iterations on the small screen on the DC television series Arrow.
The script for the project was written by Christina Hodson, with Cathy Yan attached to direct back in April. Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap will be producing with Sue Kroll under her Kroll & Co Entertainment banner and Bryan Unkeless of Clubhouse Pictures.
Birds of Prey is scheduled for cinematic release on the 7th February 2020.
