Major media outlets are starting to report that Disney has removed James Gunn from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after a number of old tweets resurfaced that touched on topics such as pedophilia and rape.
The move comes after people on social media resurfaced old tweets in which the filmmaker joked about pedophilia and rape. James Gunn, responded to the old tweets before deleting his account saying:
Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humour.
Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn has released a statement saying:
The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.
James Gunn has written and directed the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films and was currently penning the third one, which was expected to begin shooting sometime in the fall in Atlanta. Now the question remains on who will Marvel Studios and Disney bring in? Will they maintain whatever script has been written for the third installment?
