Entertainment Weekly is exclusively reporting that Djimon Hounsou has quietly been cast as an ancient Wizard in New Line’s upcoming DC film Shazam!
Shazam is one of the oldest comic characters around, originally known as Captain Marvel. It focused on a young teenager, Billy Batson, who becomes the superhero when he utters the magic word ‘Shazam!’. The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Aries, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.
Djimon Hounsou (whose credits include Guardians of the Galaxy and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) will be playing the role of a 3,000 year-old sorcerer who gives young Billy Batson his powers. It was previously reported that Ron Cephas Jones was likely to play the role but declined due to a scheduling conflict. In the comics, The Wizard comes from Ancient Egypt who uses his powers to fight evil and has been seeking a successor to carry on his mission. He passes his power to Billy who only needs to shout his name — SHAZAM — to instantly become a superhero with an array of powers. Filming on Shazam! recently wrapped.
Shazam! is currently scheduled for cinematic release on the 5th April 2019.
