The Hollywood Reporter is exclusively reporting that Yoson An is the latest name to join the cast of Disney’s live-action adaptation of Mulan.
Disney’s retelling of an old Chinese folktale focusing on a young Chinese maiden who learns that her weak father is called up into the army in order to fight the invading Huns. Knowing that he’ll not survive war in his condition, she decides to disguise herself as a man and take his place.
Yoson An (whose credits include Dead Lucky and Mortal Engines) will be playing the role of Chen Honghui, a confident and ambitious recruit who joins Commander Tung’s unit. He becomes Mulan’s most important ally and eventual love interest. (This character differs from Li Shang, the Chinese army captain who was the main love interest in the animated film.)
Niki Caro has been attached to direct the project since February of last year, with Chris Bender, Jason Reed and Jake Weiner serving as producers. The duo could join already cast Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen and Gong Li, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Ron Yuan, with Jet Li in allegedly in talks.
