Deadline is exclusively reporting that Cathy Yan is set to direct Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s untitled film based on Birds of Prey that’ll feature Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.
The report states that the project is based on Birds of Prey, which sees the DC universe female crime fighters teaming up, primarily Barbara Gordon (Batgirl/Oracle), Black Canary and Huntress. It states that it’s not confirmed if all of these characters will feature in the upcoming film, but it’s clear that both the main characters and most of the creative braintrust will be female.
The report states that a deal is yet to be completed, but it is expected that Yan will become the second female filmmaker to join the DC film universe after Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), and be the first female Asian director to direct a superhero film. Despite being a new talent in the industry, it’s stated in the report that Yan’s presentation for the Birds of Prey project was exceptional, and Margot Robbie has held firm in her desire for this project to be directed by a woman. Yan’s only directed one feature film so far (alongside a few short films), but the feature film in question (Dead Pigs) won the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance earlier in the year.
The script for the project was written by Christina Hodson, is recently revealed would be writing the script for the Batgirl film. Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap will be producing with Sue Kroll under her Kroll & Co Entertainment banner and Bryan Unkeless of Clubhouse Pictures. It’s believed that the film is being aimed to start production either at the end of this year or early next year.
