Deadline is reporting that Lili Simmons, Hannah Emily Anderson and Lee Tergesen are the latest names to join the cast of the television series adaptation of The Purge at USA Network and SyFy.
The premise of The Purge franchise is set in near future America where once a year there is a twelve hour period where all crime, including the most insane acts of murder, are legal. The television series comes from franchise creator James DeMonaco, Blumhouse Television and Universal Cable Productions. There’s been a trilogy of films released already, with a fourth set to come out this summer. The original starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, making over $89m worldwide on a $3m budget. While the original was a contained thriller, its sequel Purge: Anarchy, went city wide and was more action orientated starring Frank Grillo, making over $111m worldwide on a $9m budget. The last installment, Purge: Election Year, seen Frank Grillo reprise his role from Anarchy and star alongside Elizabeth Mitchell, making over $118m worldwide on a $10m budget.
Lili Simmons (whose credits include Banshee and Ray Donovan) will be playing the role of Lila, a young, rich, and rebellious, woman who refuses to fit in with the pro-Purge socialite crowd. Her confidence and charm mask a vulnerability that will be exposed as she attempts to deal with unfinished business before the sun rises. Hannah Emily Anderson (whose credits include Shoot The Messenger and Jigsaw) will be playing the role of Jenna, an anti-Purge and devoted to charitable causes, who is accustomed to locking down on Purge Night. Her choice to venture out for the first time leads to an encounter with violence that forces her to deal with deep truths about herself and her marriage. Lee Tergesen (whose credits include Power and Outcast) will be playing the role of Joe, an armoured, masked, and seemingly ordinary man who drives through town, intervening acts of Purge violence while listening to the taped lectures of a motivational life coach.
Platinum Dunes and DeMonaco’s longtime producing partner Sebastien K. Lemercier will serve as executive producers on the series. Thomas Kelly will also executive produce as well as serve as a showrunner for the series. The trio join recently cast Gabriel Chavarria, Jessica Garza, Amanda Warren and Colin Woodell.
