The Tracking Board has exclusively reported that Romanian boxer Florian ‘Big Nasty’ Munteanu has been cast as Ivan Drago’s son for Creed 2.
Released in 2015, Creed is a spinoff of the Rocky franchise where we follow a young man named Adonis Johnson, who happens to be the son of a famous boxing great known as Apollo Creed. Taken in by Apollo’s widow, Mary Anne, after he loses his mother, Adonis grows up wanting to follow in his fathers footsteps in boxing. This leads him to moving to Philadelphia in the hope of getting his father’s old friend and rival, Rocky Balboa, to train and mentor him.
According to reports in the media, the sequel is to pick up with us following Adonis Creed both inside and outside of the ring as he deals with his newfound fame, issues with his family and continuing his quest to become a champion. Steven Caple Jr. will be directing the sequel, with the screenplay penned by Cheo Hodari Coker and Sylvester Stallone. Sylvester Stallone is expected to reprise his role, with Dolph Lundgren set to return as Ivan Drago, alongside Michael B. Jordan as Adonis and Tessa Thompson as Bianca.
I don’t know much about Munteanu and in regards to the role, he’ll certainly looked the part when, I’m assuming, he’ll face off against Jordan’s Adonis. I do wonder where they’re looking to go with this storyline as Drago Sr. of course killed Apollo Creed in the ring. Will Drago Jr. be looking to come out of his father’s shadow and make up for the sins of the father? Will Drago Sr. be as ice-cold as he was in Rocky IV? I absolutely loved Creed, directed by Ryan Coogler, who has gone on to get that Marvel Studios budget money and direct Black Panther and that has me slightly less enthusiastic about this sequel.
Production for Creed 2 is expected to commence in March and is scheduled for cinematic release on the 21st November 2018.
