Aladdin: Mena Massoud And Naomi Scott To Star In Disney’s Live-Action Adaptation

Disney have announced at the D23 Expo that they have found their leads in Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott for their live-action adaptation of Aladdin.

The 1992 animated film had us following Aladdin, a street rat who lives in a large and busy town known as Agrabah alongside his loyal monkey friend Abu. When Princess Jasmine gets tired of being forced to remain in the palace that overlooks the city and  accept a suitor for marriage, she sneaks out to the town where she coincidentally meets Aladdin. Soon enough, the sultan’s advisor Jafar, has Aladdin following him to aid him unknowingly to recover a mysterious lamp from the Cave of Wonders that introduces us to the Genie.

The news for Aladdin comes after a lengthy search which was reported earlier in the week that the studio was finding it difficult to find a male lead that can act and sing, particularly as they wanted someone of Middle-Eastern or Indian descent. They’ve finally found their Aladdin in Mena Massoud, an up-and-coming actor that has appeared on television series Open Heart and will soon be seen in Amazon’s series adaptation of Jack Ryan. Naomi Scott has been cast as Jasmine and will be more well known to some people, appearing in television series Terra Nova and recently in films The 33 and Power Rangers. After months of speculation, it was finally confirmed that Will Smith will be playing the voice of Genie.

The film is being directed by Guy Ritchie and as of yet there’s still no official release date for Aladdin.
