The Hollywood Reporter is exclusively reporting that Hugh Jackman has join Jason Reitman’s political drama The Frontrunner.
Hugh Jackman (whose recent credits include Eddie The Eagle and Logan) will be portraying fallen politician Gary Hart, who was considered the frontrunner for the 1988 Democratic Presidential nomination when his campaign was rocked by revelations of an extramarital affair with Donna Rice. The U.S Senator from Colorado then dropped out of the race.
The film is based on Matt Bai’s 2014 book All The Truth Is Out, which chronicled Hart’s rise and fall as he sought the nation’s highest office. The Governor of Massachusetts, Mike Dukakis, had been trailing Hart ended up landing the Democratic nomination but eventually lost to George Bush. The extramarital affair revelation proved to be a turning point in American politics and the media, where personal indiscretions became fair game in the tabloid age, as before Hart the media turned a blind eye to the infidelities of politicians.
Jason Reitman adapted the screenplay alongside veteran political journalist Matt Bai and former Hillary Clinton press secretary Jay Carson.
