A statement was released via the official Star Wars website to announce the departure of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from directing the Han Solo spinoff film, with Deadline is exclusively reporting that Ron Howard is the front runner to helm the film.
President of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, released a statement saying:
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller released a statement saying:
Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew.
The untitled Han Solo film, written by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, is set to cover events in Han Solo’s life prior to his appearance in 1977’s Star Wars film. It was announced back in July 2015 that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were brought onboard to direct the Han Solo spinoff film, which then began principal photography at London’s Pinewood Studios towards the end of February. The film is still in production with several weeks of reshoots planned for the summer. Disney stated that the film will still meet its cinematic release in May of next year.
While Deadline and Variety claim that sources are telling them that Ron Howard is in talks to takeover the reins of helming the film, Variety has also reported a source told them that Lord & Miller were infact fired from the production.
The source stated:
It was a culture clash from day one. She didn’t even like the way they folded their socks. They weren’t given the leeway to do what they had to do. Kathy, her team and Larry Kasdan have been doing it their way for a very long time. They know how the cheese is made and that’s how they want it made. It became a very polarising set.
Well this news about Lord & Miller’s departure is a bit of a shock, considering how long into production the film is and the fact it was only a few weeks out from completion. To start stating now that the reason for the departure is due to creative differences, considering the duo have been attached to the project for almost twenty-four months is the biggest cop-out response I’ve heard. Now it could be speculated that the style of the duo’s humour/directing could have been too different from the style that the studio were looking for in regards to making it feel like a Star Wars film or that the studio had creatively cuffed them and they decided to leave. From the Variety source, it sounds like it could be the former but I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this story in the next few weeks.
The yet to be titled Star Wars Han Solo film is scheduled for cinematic release on the 25th May 2018.
