Variety is exclusively reporting that Sam Claflin is in talks to join Shailene Woodley in STX Entertainment’s survival thriller Adrift.
The film is based on the true story of a woman who sets off on a sailing trip to Tahiti with her fiance but, following a massive storm, finds herself alone at sea with her boat in ruins. The story, which jumps between the couple’s romance in flashbacks and the treacherous present, follows her attempts to save herself and the man she loves on a 1,500 mile journey.
Back in early April it was reported that Miles Teller was in talks to play the role of the fiance, but the Variety report here states that Teller ended up passing on the project due to scheduling conflicts. Sam Claflin’s credits include Hunger Games sequels Catching Fire and Mockingjay Part 1 and 2, as well as Me Before You and Their Finest. The script has been written by Aaron and Jordan Kandell, the duo that penned the script for Disney’s Moana, with Baltasar Kormákur directing the film and he’s no stranger to survival films having directed 2015’s Everest. The Kandell’s are also producing the project which is set to begin filming in the summer.
There is no cinematic release date as of yet for Adrift.
