Venom: Tom Hardy To Star, Ruben Fleischer To Direct

Sony Pictures have announced on social media that Tom Hardy will be playing Eddie Brock, also more known as Spider-Man villain Venom, with media outlets reporting that Ruben Fleischer will be directing.

The Venom character is an alien symbiote that need a human host to survive. In return, the alien empowers its victim with incredible powers. At this moment it’s unclear as to which Venom incarnation Sony will be using for this standalone film as the character has had quite a few since being introduced in 1988, ranging from being originally a villain, then morphed into an anti-hero and (kind of) a good guy.

Sony Pictures used their twitter page to announce Tom Hardy’s involvement, with him in a selfie whilst wearing a Venom shirt:

Report from Deadline states that Sony have stressed that Venom is from Sony’s Marvel Universe and will not be a spinoff but the first film after Spider-Man from its Marvel Universe of characters (basically no MCU connection). The studio is also developing a Silver Sable aka Black Cat film among other characters from the Spider-Man catalogue. Ruben Fleischer’s credits include Zombieland, Gangster Squad as well as episodes of television series such as Superstore and Santa Clarita Diet. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner will be writing the script, with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach serving as producers alongside Amy Pascal. Production is set to commence in the later half of the year. Initially I had no expectations for this Venom project but with this announcement of not only Tom Hardy’s involvement, but also having a director on board as well, I’m definitely more intrigued now. Still, I’ll believe it when I’m sat down to see the film at the cinema.

Venom is scheduled for cinematic release on the 5th October 2018.
