Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Sony Pictures have pencilled in Masters of the Universe for a 2019 release date but McG is no longer attached to direct the He-Man reboot.
Masters of the Universe revolves around He-Man, a prince who transforms into a warrior and becomes the last hope for a magical world known as Eternia that has been ravaged by the sinister dark lord known as Skeletor. There has been a few adaptations, an animated version called He-Man and the Masters of the Universe which aired between 1983 to 1985 and also had a film called Masters of the Universe released in 1987, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. Stateside the film only made $17m.
McG was attached to the project since January last year and it’s unclear whether it was a scheduling issue for his departure or that both parties maybe wanted to go in different directions. Sources tell EW that Sony are meeting with directors and David S. Goyer is currently working on the screenplay for the film. Escape Artists Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch and DeVon Franklin will be on board as Producers.
Masters of the Universe is scheduled for cinematic release on the 18th December 2019.
