Set in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky, Outsiders focuses on a group of folk on the mountain known as the Farrell clan and the locals in the nearby town of Blackburg. The Farrells are a group of people who have shunned normal society and live a spartan existence in the woods. Paranoid of outsiders, the family controls a mountain coveted by a national mining outfit for its coal deposits.
Interim President and CEO of WGN America, Peter Kern released a statement saying:
After three years of investing in marquee, brand-defining dramas, WGN America has successfully expanded its audience, its reach, and its presence in the minds of viewers. In our next phase, we intend to expand our original and unique content to continue growing our relevance and appeal to the widest possible audience. To achieve this, we will be reallocating our resources to a more diverse programming strategy and to new structures, enabling us to expand both the quantity and breadth of content aired by WGN America. This move is designed to deliver even more value to our advertising and distribution partners. To free up the resources to reach this goal, we will unfortunately not be renewing Outsiders. We are grateful to our production partners at Sony Pictures Television and the terrifically talented people who made the show possible.
The decision comes ahead of the shows second season finale, which will now serve as a series finale, that will air on the network on the 25th April. The news comes after a major change of head at WGN America’s parent Tribune Media as Tribune President and CEO Peter Liguori, who was behind the relaunch of WGNA as a cable network for premium content, greenlighting Outsiders and Underground, left the company last month with Peter Kern stepping into his role. There was recent reports stating that there could be a potential merge with Sinclair and rumours circled that they were stripping the company to get it ready for a sale.
Currently Sony TV will try to shop Outsiders to other networks to keep the series alive for a third season. The series stars David Morse, Ryan Hurt, Joe Anderson, Gillian Alexy, Kyle Gallner, Christina Jackson and Thomas M. Wright.
