Variety is exclusively reporting that Hugo Weaving is the latest name to join the cast of Universal and MRC’s adaptation of Philip Reeve’s novel Mortal Engines, which is being written and produced by Peter Jackson.
The novel is set thousands of years into the future where Earth’s cities now roam the globe on huge wheels, devouring each other in a struggle over diminishing resources. On one of these massive Traction Cities, Tom Natsworthy has an unexpected encounter with a mysterious young woman from the Outlands, who will change the course of his life forever.
It’s not stated in the report what role Hugo Weaving will have in the film. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens will be co-writing the film and Christian Rivers will be directing. Zane Weiner, Amanda Walker and Deborah Forte will serve as producers along with Walsh and Jackson, while Kamins will serve as executive producer. Production is set to commence this spring in New Zealand. The trio will be joining already cast Robert Sheehan, Ronan Raftery, Hera Hilmar, Stephen Lang, Jihae and Leila George.
Mortal Engines is scheduled for cinematic release on the 14th December 2018.
