Arrow: Katie Cassidy Returning As Series Regular For Season 6

Media outlets are reporting that Katie Cassidy will be returning to Arrow in a series regular capacity for the shows sixth season.

The shows executive producer Marc Guggenheim, released the following statement:

One of the things that most excites us about Arrow is that we go where the story takes us. Last year, the story took us to the tragic death of Laurel Lance. This year, our midseason finale reintroduced us to Laurel’s doppelgänger, Black Siren. We were so taken by Katie’s fearless interpretation of this character that we knew her story was not yet finished. We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Katie back to Arrow as Black Siren, though as her appearances on Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow this season show, she never really left the family.

Katie Cassidy’s Laurel Lance character met her demise in the latter half of the shows fourth season, though has appeared across the CW/DC shows such as The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow as well as Arrow. She appears as Laurel Lance in dreams, flashbacks and also as her Earth 2 doppelganger Black Siren, which is the role Katie Cassidy will be reprising for Arrow’s last two episodes of the fifth season before gaining series regular status for season 6.

Admittedly while I think Katie Cassidy much better suits the role of Black Siren than the original Laurel Lance/Black Canary we seen, I’m rather unsure about this announcement for a few reasons. The obvious being that the main ensemble is rather too crowded already and if Siren is to join Team Arrow, someone is either going to get sidelined or worse, bunked off. The speculating mind instantly thinks of Juliana Harkavy’s Dinah Drake being the possible causality due to the characters similar abilities. Then again a long story-arc of Black Siren aiming for redemption intrigues me and part of me hopes that she doesn’t join the team instantly and builds upon the anti-hero label. We’ll have to wait until the last episodes of season 5 to see potentially where Black Sirens reappearance will lead to.
