Media outlets are reporting that Sony Pictures is fast-tracking their long-in-development spinoff of Spider-Man villain Venom and putting it for cinematic release on the 5th October 2018.
The Venom character is an alien symbiote that need a human host to survive. In return, the alien empowers its victim with incredible powers. At this moment it’s unclear as to which Venom incarnation Sony will be using for this standalone film as the character has had quite a few since being introduced in 1988, ranging from being originally a villain, then morphed into an anti-hero and (kind of) a good guy.
It was around this time last year that Edge of Tomorrow writer Dante Harper was brought on board to write a draft and then Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner penned the most recent draft. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing as well as overseeing the project, with Amy Pascal also attached to produce. There is currently no actor or director attached to the project.
The news comes as no surprise with Sony finally pushing forward with a Venom spinoff film as it has been on the cards since way back when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was about to be released as Sony began to attach a team to develop the script for Venom and the Sinister Six films. The question becomes now whether or not Sony will try to keep it separate from having it being attached to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Spider-Man.
Venom is scheduled for cinematic release on the 5th October 2018.
