Batman: Matt Reeves Officially Directing DC Film

Film News - Batman - Matt Reeves Officially Directing DC FilmWarner Bros. today has officially announced that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes/War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves will be directing the DC Film Batman.

In an official statement, Matt Reeves said:

I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honoured and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.

Warner Bros. President and Chief Content Officer Tony Emmerich added:

We are thrilled to have Matt Reeves taking the helm of Batman, the crown jewel of our DC slate. Matt’s deep roots in genre films and his evolution into an emotional world-building director make him the perfect filmmaker to guide the Dark Knight through this next journey.

Three weeks ago Ben Affleck departed from directing Batman’s solo outing in this DC Extended Universe and nearly two weeks ago it was reported that Matt Reeves had been having meetings with the studio about directing the film, even so much as to one of the reports claiming that the studio was offering him the reins to helm the film. Then last week, news came out that negotiations between Matt Reeves and Warner Bros. had broken down and while many, including myself, believed that would be the end of talks, the initial exclusive report from THR on the matter did say that there was a possibility of talks resuming when heads cooled down the line.

It’s been a whirlwind few weeks surrounding the Batman solo project and while they’ve finally got the director attached, people will still question the statements and the lack of mentioning Ben Affleck, especially now with news breaking out of a Nightwing solo film in development, which will have people online going into overdrive speculating that Dick Grayson could be replacing Affleck’s Bruce Wayne. Right now, I’m just happy that they met up again and a deal was agreed for Reeves to direct.
