Suicide Squad 2: Directors Shortlist Allegedly Revealed

Film News - Suicide Squad 2 - Directors Shortlist Allegedly RevealedMedia outlets have been reporting that Warner Bros. are considering a few directors for their DC Films sequel Suicide Squad 2, with the biggest name on the list being Mel Gibson.

The 2016 film, directed by David Ayer, followed villains such as Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc, who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter sentences. While the film was met with mixed reception critically, it would end up making $745m worldwide on its $175m budget.

David Ayer is currently developing and set to direct another film in the DC Extended Universe, Gotham City Sirens, which focuses on the female villains of the DCEU and will reunite Ayer with Margot Robbie. With Ayer attached to that project, the search begins for a director for the Suicide Squad sequel.

Variety reports that as well as Mel Gibson, the WB has met and is planning to meet with directors Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland and Gangster Squad), Daniel Espinosa (Safe House and Life) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies and The Night Before). Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter is stating that Mel Gibson is in early talks with the studio heads and sources are telling them that he is familiarising himself with the material.

I wouldn’t be putting too much hope into a Mel Gibson directed Suicide Squad film being a thing, regardless of how much I’d be up for it, primarily because I can’t see how Warner Bros. wouldn’t be smarting a bit with his ‘piece of shit’ comment about Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice back in November with Deadline. As with the other directors being considered they’re fine but I doubt they can have much say with the final product if the last few DC Films are anything to go by.
