Variety is exclusively reporting that Ben Affleck has stepped down from directing duties for DC/Warner Bros. planned Batman solo film.
As various other media outlets are reporting the story, they’re all keen to stress that Affleck is still on board to play the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman whilst also remain as a producer. Though after weeks of speculation after comments from Affleck and sources close to Variety say that after Affleck and Warner Bros. had discussions about how to make the best film possible, they came to this decision together.
In a statement, Ben Affleck said:
There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.
The studio released a statement saying:
Warner Bros. fully supports Ben Affleck’s decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life.
The news doesn’t come as a surprise due to Ben Affleck’s comments about the script in which he said that he wouldn’t be directing the film if the script isn’t good enough and it appears like it just might not be. I’m sure now that any hope that I had in the long-term health of the DCEU is in very short supply, with most of that being placed on the expectation that a Affleck directed Batman film would be nothing short of good. It is unfortunate that we won’t see it with this first solo outing, now it’s a question of who will they bring in?
