Deadline is exclusively reporting that New Line that attached Tim Story to director the Shaft reboot.
The reboot will be continuing the lore of the iconic private eye John Shaft, which Richard Roundtree portrayed in the 1971 film directed by Gordon Parks. Samuel L. Jackson would play his nephew in the 2000 film directed. by John Singleton. The new film has a scripted written by Kenya Barris and Alex Barnow, with John Davis, Ira Napoliello and Kenya Barris serving as Producers on the project.
While details of the plot from New Line is being kept under wraps, the reporter in the Deadline report heard the idea that this film is set to reinvigorate the franchise, focusing on the son of the cool private eye who always finds himself navigating the grey terrain between the law and organised crime in New York City. Tim Story’s recent directing credits include the Ride Along films and the Think Like A Man films.
It’ll be interesting to see where they go with this version of the Shaft story, will it be the son of Roundtree’s Shaft we focus on? Will Jackson’s Shaft be included? Time will tell.
