The Hollywood Reporter is exclusively reporting that Lionsgate have acquired the rights for Morgan Creek Entertainment’s Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me and have pencilled it in for a cinematic release date of 16th June….the late rapper’s birthday.
All Eyez On Me will follow the rise of Tupac Shakur to superstardom, as a hip-hop artist, actor, poet and activist, as well as his imprisonment and controversial time at Death Row Records, right up to his death on the Las Vegas Strip where he was murdered.
The biopic has been in development since 2011 when Morgan Creek teamed up with Emmett/Furla/Oasis to make the film, and originally had Antoine Fuqua attached to direct. Fuqua left and John Singleton came in, only for him to depart the project as well and eventually Benny Boom came aboard to helm the picture. In October 2015, the film faced a $10m lawsuit from Emmett/Furla/Oasis against Morgan Creek, saying that the company had breached its agreement by selecting a lead actor and setting a budget and production schedule without their approval. Currently the case is ongoing but on hold pending an appeal of a decision.
The film is scheduled for cinematic release on the 16th June 2017.
