Variety exclusively reports that Gabrielle Union has joined the cast of The Public, which has been written and will be directed by Emilio Estevez.
The film centres around a standoff with police and library officials when library patrons – many of whom are homeless and mentally ill – stage a sit-in, turning the Cincinnati Public Library into an impromptu homeless shelter for one night during a cold snap. Emilio Estevez says the story asks the question, “Who will care for those individuals who are unable to care for themselves?”
Gabrielle Union will be playing the role of an ambitious television news reporter who uses the event as a way to bolster ratings for the network as well as her own personal profile. Union will be joining a cast that includes Alec Baldwin, Taylor Schilling, Jena Malone, Emilio Estevez and Che ‘Rhymefest’ Smith. Principal photography for the film will commence in the middle of January in Cincinnati, Ohio. Lisa Neidenthal, Alex Lebovici and Steve Ponce of Oriah Entertainment will serve as Producers on the film, whilst Michael Bien of Cedarvale Pictures will serve as Executive Producer.
