Captain Planet: Leonardo DiCaprio Set To Team Up With Paramount To Develop Film

film-news-captain-planet-leonardo-dicaprio-set-to-team-up-with-paramount-to-develop-filmThe Hollywood Reporter exclusively reports that Leonardo DiCaprio is set to team up with Paramount to produce a film adaptation of 90’s cartoon series Captain Planet.

Paramount is currently in talks to secure the rights for Captain Planet, which has been boosted now with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions teaming up with them to lock the project down and if successful, DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran will serve as Producers on Captain Planet. Actor Glen Powell (Scream Queens/Everybody Wants Some!!) and his writing partner Jono Matt are in talks with the studio to pen the screenplay for them.

Captain Planet was a cartoon series that aired in 1990 till 1992, focusing on five young people from around the world who were given magical rings that had the power to control natural elements. United, they can summon Captain Planet, a superhero who helps them fight against environmental evils. The report states that Powell and Matt had an interesting take on where to go with the material, with sources telling The Hollywood Reporter that the story takes place years after the adventures on the cartoon series, with Captain Planet now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him.

It initially sounded random as hell once I seen the reports of DiCaprio/Captain Planet emerged very late last night, but it makes sense considering Leo is the most well-known environmentalist out there who speaks out on issues such as global warming and the take from Powell and Matt, according to THR’s sources, makes even more sense on how to handle the material. Deep down part of me wants a live-action feature film focused on Don Cheadle’s take on Captain Planet but I highly doubt they’ll go for that.
