Variety is exclusively reporting that newcomer Cailee Spaeny has been cast as the female lead in Legendary’s Pacific Rim sequel Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.
The sequel found it’s director in Steven S. DeKnight back in late February to begin working on the world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham which saw the original film come out in 2013, making the film about giant robots versus Kaiju on a $190m budget and the film earned $411m worldwide. Plot details for the sequel are being kept under wraps at the minute, the only detail given at the moment is that the lead character will be the son of Idris Elba’s character. Even Spaeny’s role has not been revealed with this announcement. Guillermo del Toro will serve as Producer on the sequel along with Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni, John Boyega and Femi Oguns under the Upper Room Productions banner. Cale Boyter will serve as Executive Producer.
Cailee Spaeny will be joining a cast that includes John Boyega and Scott Eastwood. This news comes as a surprise to me, considering the fact its a blockbuster film and Cailee Spaeny is a virtual unknown as her only credit so far is the indie film Counting to 1,000 which came out in the US earlier in the year.
There is no cinematic release date as of yet for Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.
