Deadline exclusively reports that Legendary are targeting Scott Eastwood to have a key role alongside John Boyega in Pacific Rim 2.
The report comes just a few hours after Universal Pictures announced that the film is set for a 2018 release and so far this report states that it isn’t clear what Eastwood’s role would be in the film, just makes it clear that the studio is quickly looking to get its cast together and have set their sights on Eastwood first.
The sequel found it’s director in Steven S. DeKnight back in late February to begin working on the world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham which saw the original film come out in 2013, making the film about giant robots versus Kaiju on a $190m budget and the film earned $411m worldwide. The original starred Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba. With the casting of John Boyega in the lead announced earlier in the month, it’s rumoured still at this point that his character will be the son of Idris Elba’s character Stacker Pentecost.
Eastwood is fast emerging as a potential star after appearing in films such as Fury and The Longest Ride, he’ll soon appearing on are screens again in Warner Bros./DC Films Suicide Squad, Oliver Stone’s Snowden biopic, Ben Affleck’s Live By Night and Universal’s biggest film franchise Fast 8 which is being directed by F. Gary Gray. It’s an interesting development and I’m on the fence as of yet in terms of whether or not Scott Eastwood could be a potential star as I’ve yet to see him in a key role on the big screen, I mean I can’t remember him being in Fury at all.
Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled for cinematic release on the 23rd February 2018.
