Universal Pictures have pencilled in Legendary’s Pacific Rim 2 starring John Boyega for a cinematic release on the 23rd February 2018.
The sequel found it’s director in Steven S. DeKnight back in late February to begin working on the world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham which saw the original film come out in 2013, making the film about giant robots versus Kaiju on a $190m budget and the film earned $411m worldwide. The original starred Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba. With the casting of John Boyega in the lead announced earlier in the month, it’s rumoured still at this point that his character will be the son of Idris Elba’s character Stacker Pentecost.
I think this release date is an intriguing move by Universal to pencil it in for early 2018 release. It’ll be offering something different a week after Marvel’s Black Panther and in a report on this news from Deadline, it’ll be wedged in between Black Panther and a Fox/Marvel untitled film project. The main reason I find this interesting is that the film will be released two months after Star Wars: Episode VIII which also happens to star John Boyega and I’m sure that’ll help bring a few extra film viewers to catch out Pacific Rim 2.
Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled for cinematic release on the 23rd February 2018.
