Entertainment Weekly exclusively reports that Rick Gonzalez will be playing a vigilante known as Wild Dog in the fifth season of Arrow.
According to the EW report, Rick Gonzalez’s (credits include Reaper, Coach Carter and Mr. Robot) Wild Dog is a new vigilante in Star City whose reckless and cocksure nature prompts the Green Arrow to take him under his wing.
In the DC Comics, Wild Dog is known as Jack Wheeler, a former college football player with a promising future ahead. After an injury he leaves those dreams behind and drops out of school and serves in the Marine Corps. Until his return, he went to night classes to get his education and would meet a woman that would become his fiancee…who would then be murdered by the mafia and thus the birth of Wild Dog begins.
It’s unclear going by this EW report if Gonzalez’s Wild Dog will be the supposed ‘James’ character that will be Oliver’s adversary for season 5 (which was reported by TVLine at the start of May) but his backstory in the comics definitely fits with the line in the report saying that James is ‘An ‘irrepressibly charming’ contemporary of Oliver’s who is described as ‘a man on a mission’ — out as he is to avenge a tragic, violent loss from his own, years-ago past.’ While I liked Gonzalez as an actor appearing in a few films and the Reaper series last year, he literally went off my radar until he resurfaced again in a guest starring role on Mr. Robot. By the sounds of the characters origins and by his comic appearance, there will be comparisons made that Arrow Season 5 will be going Daredevil Season 2 with some DC flavour and then there will be a few Casey Jones memes being prepped for Wild Dog’s first appearance with a hockey mask.
