Deadline exclusively reports that John Boyega has signed up to play the lead role in Pacific Rim sequel titled Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.
While details of the sequel are being kept under wraps, the report does state that it’s believed that Boyega will be playing the son of Idris Elba’s character Stacker Pentecost from the 2013 film. Steven S. DeKnight is attached to direct the film which is set to begin production towards the end of the year.
Legendary’s Vice Chairman of Worldwide Production, Mary Parent said on the casting announcement:
It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men.
Guillermo Del Toro added his thoughts on the casting announcement:
I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.
While I’m still trying to remember if Elba’s character even mentioned that he had a son in the original film, I am excited for Boyega to lead this sequel of giant robots versus giant monsters action and it will be interesting to see who from the original film will be returning for Maelstorm.
