Marvel Studios today have officially confirmed Cate Blanchett’s role as well as new cast additions in Karl Urban and Jeff Goldblum in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok.
It states that Blanchett will be playing the mysterious and powerful villain Hela, Jeff Goldblum will be playing the eccentric Grandmaster, Tessa Thompson will be playing Valkyrie and Karl Urban will be playing Skurge. They’ll be joining a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Sir Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Ruler of Asgard.
With this casting announcement, Producer Kevin Feige said:
The continuation of the epic Thor franchise will be powerful and unique, and with the additions of Cate, Jeff, Tessa, Karl, and Mark to the cast we have the makings of his most dangerous and heroic adventure yet. The sheer, raw talent each of these actors brings to the screen can’t be quantified. Having any one of them join the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be an honor, and having all of them is incredible.
In the comics, Hela is the Asgardian Goddess of Death that rules over the dual realms of Niffleheim (one of the Nine Worlds in Marvel’s Asgardian mythology) and Hel. The Grandmaster, like the Collector (Benicio Del Toro’s role in Guardians of the Galaxy), is one of the Elders of the Universe. He also has an interest in collecting the Infinity Gems and, as his name suggests, has a fascination with games and tends to find himself making large scale wagers on outcomes of clashes between good and evil with other massively powerful entities. Valkyrie has had a few versions in the comics, one in which the character first appeared as a disguise created by a villain named Enchantress. Another version is that a regular woman becomes the host to the spirit of slain Asgardian warrior Brunnhilde. Skurge is an Asgardian villain who served as a violent sidekick to Enchantress, whom he was bewitched by.
I do enjoy the latest additions to the cast and with the announcement of whom they will play, I’m definitely intrigued as to which version of the Valkyrie character Tessa Thompson will play. Goldblum will be a laugh to watch on screen and Urban joining the MCU is great!
Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled for cinematic release on the 3rd November 2017.
