The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reports that Warner Bros. is developing a film revolving around Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.
The Harley Quinn character will be making her big screen debut in the upcoming Suicide Squad film this August and THR, as stated in the report, is currently developing a spinoff for the DC Entertainment anti-heroine which will focus on several of DC’s female heroes and villains, meaning that Harley Quinn may be the anchor for the film rather than a clear cut solo outing. Details of the project are being kept under wraps but Batgirl and Birds of Prey are sited to have been mentioned which may or may not lead to something down the line. Even details of the screenwriter is being kept a secret but THR states that it is known that the writer is female.
Sources say that Margot Robbie will be on board as a producer on the project and was the driving force on getting it to this developing stage, adding that when she got cast in the role of Harley Quinn, she researched the character through a number of comics and in the process grew to love a number of DC’s female characters. She even brought the screenwriter on board to help develop the project and brought the idea forward to Warner Bros. which immediately sparked this idea of spinning off the Harley Quinn character into a female-centric DC Extended Universe film.
Initially when I heard this news I wasn’t too sure until I read the actual report. If they do go with the Birds of Prey setup it could be interesting to tell out from Harley Quinn’s point-of-view or they could bring onto the big screen the friendship/relationship of Harley and Poison Ivy onto the big screen? There’s quite a number of possibilities here as DC have a good catalogue of characters to use that it will be difficult to narrow down until we hear more news about this project if it picks up momentum in the next year.
Suicide Squad is scheduled for cinematic release on the 5th August 2016.
