Deadline exclusively reports that Gael García Bernal has been cast in the lead role of Jonás Cuarón’s Zorro reboot.
This will be a reunion for Bernal and Cuarón as they have worked together before on a film called Desierto which is set to be released by STX Entertainment some time later in the year. Jonás Cuarón will be directing the Zorro reboot on a script he’s written, aiming to begin production at Pinewood Dominican Republic studios in Autumn and is currently out in Cannes with Pantelion Films looking to find international distribution at the film market. The picture is being done as a co-production between Lantica Pictures and Mark Amin’s Sobini Films and will be financed by Lantica Media.
The brief premise for Z is as follows:
Set in the near future, Z re-imagines the classic legend based on the beloved masked swashbuckler.
On news of the casting, Mark Amin said:
I have always loved Gael for this role. Zorro is a hero who is charming, witty and clever. Gael possesses all those characteristic and he’s able to deliver them with a modern spin to introduce the Zorro character to a new audience.
Gael García Bernal, whose film credits include The Motorcycle Diaries and Babel, has recently won a Golden Globe for Best Actor for his role in Amazon series Mozart In The Jungle and playing Zorro will definitely propel him to a higher profile. I am curious as to how a Zorro set in the near future will look.
