Star Wars Episode VIII: Film Gets New Release Date

Film News - Star Wars Episode VIII - Film Gets New Release DateDisney have decided that fans of Star Wars will have to wait a bit longer for Episode VIII, moving the film from 26th May 2017 to a 15th December 2017 cinematic release.

While Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to break box office records (currently at $1.8bn worldwide), according to the Hollywood Reporter article on the news, they believe from insiders at Disney that the reason for the seven-month push back to capitalise that box office and hope that lightning will strike twice. Problem being that Episode VIII will come out the same day as Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. Rian Johnson will be writing and directing Episode VIII and principal photography for the film will commence in London next month.

While the seven-month push back will upset quite a number of people for obvious reasons (having to wait an extra seven months!), I’m perfectly fine with Disney giving Rian Johnson and co extra time to work on the production and financially it seems better to come out when you have one box office competitor than the coming out in the middle of comic book films such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Wonder Woman. Fear not though, we have Rogue One to feed the Star Wars universe addiction until then!

Star Wars: Episode VIII is scheduled now for a 15th December 2017 cinematic release.
