Collider reports that Liam Neeson has signed on for the lead role of the remake of Rupert Wyatt’s prison escape thriller from 2008, The Escapist. The original starred Brian Cox, Damian Lewis, Joseph Fiennes, Seu Jorge, Liam Cunningham, and Dominic Cooper (also a brief appearance from his pre-WWE days Sheamus). Wyatt will be on board as a producer while Sean O’Keefe will be penning the script.
Synopsis of The Escapist:
Frank Perry is an institutionalized convict fourteen years into a life sentence without parole. When his estranged daughter falls ill, he is determined to make peace with her before it’s too late. He develops an ingenious escape plan, and recruits a dysfunctional band of escapists – misfits with unique skills required for their daring plan and united by desire to escape their hell hole of an existence.
I’m not too sure how to feel about this news, not of Neeson in particular being signed on, but over the fact of whether or not a remake of Wyatt’s film is needed. Personally I’m a fan of the original and don’t feel the need of a remake. Will be interesting to see what the rest of the casting will shape up to be.
