Wasting no time in pondering the possibilities of the potential deal of Robert Downey Jr signing on for Captain America 3 (Still in talks but the word is that it’ll go through), comic fans have been hit with more comic films coming are way….from DC/Warner Bros. It was announced today at an investor’s meeting that we will be getting at least Ten, I repeat, TEN DC films between 2016 and 2020. Now I’ll post up the list of films along with my thoughts on it, but for those that wonder, why isn’t there a Batman or Superman standalone film in the lineup? They have stated that they will happen, it’s a question of where to fit them in, slot wise. So here’s the rundown of the Films slated from 2016 to 2020:
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Pretty much everyone is waiting in anticipation for this film for Batman and Superman to share the same film together, but they won’t be alone as Wonder Woman shall appear and no doubt with the amount of films that are lined up in the future, there maybe a few more cameo’s/easter eggs to foreshadow the universe ahead. Will also be interesting to see what Jesse Esienberg’s portrayal of Lex Luthor will be like.
Suicide Squad (2016)
Now it was pretty much a given, especially with the story of a Suicide Squad film being given the go ahead a month ago, but this is definitely the most interesting film from, the announced lineup for me today. David Ayer is confirmed to be on board as the director and the studio is aiming to have ‘Four A-List actors’ to anchor the film which, to be fair, is an ambitious feat. The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that some sources are suggesting Ryan Gosling, Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Tom Hardy are in contention for the assemble but Warner Bros have made no comment on the story, so I’d take it with a pinch of salt at the minute. It’ll be interesting to see the official lineup but the rumoured lineup is as follows: Deadshot (Floyd Lawton), Captain Boomerang (George ‘Digger’ Harkness), Vixen (Mari Jiwe McCabe), Blockbuster, Mindboggler, Jaculi and Multiplex (Danton Black), so from that alone, a mix of supreme weaponry skills and superpowers of the villains/antihero variety from that supposed list, but time will tell in the coming months on the project. Always thought by a long shot that Timothy Olyphant would’ve made for a good Floyd Lawton, but DC/Warner Bros seem set to go star studded for this film.
Wonder Woman (2017)
Once she’s done appearing on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Gal Gadot will appear in her solo outing the following year. Of course the only supposed detail to come out about Wonder Woman at the moment is the alleged origin story, first reported from Badass Digest, that Diana is a demigod.
Original origin: Amazons were created by the gods using the souls of all the women murdered by men. There was, when it was all said and done, one soul remaining, the soul of the unborn daughter of the first woman to ever be murdered by a man. That woman was Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons, and she molded a figure of clay and gave to it the soul of that unborn girl. The clay was animated and became Diana, who was gifted abilities from the gods.
New 52 origin: The modern origin of Wonder Woman in the DC New 52 Universe, the second full reboot of the DC Universe, has the clay thing as the legend of Diana’s creation. The reality, though, is that Hippolyta had sex with Zeus, Hippolyta became pregnant and then Diana was born.
Not going to lie, the original origin sounds WAY more interesting to me, but BD reporters that it’s the New 52 origin that they seem set to be going with. I’ve been on the GG camp from the announcement of her playing Wonder Woman, doing the ‘wait until we see her on screen’ comment for months and months, so hopefully Gadot will prove a few doubters wrong in the role.
Justice League: Part One (2017) and Justice League: Part Two (2019)
The DC equivalent of Marvel’s Avengers, Justice League will be the fourth film to be out and it’s going to be shot back to back with part two. We’re assuming that the other characters from the League i.e The Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman and Green Lantern will be established here before their solo outings that follow after Part one of Justice League. What I find interesting about these two Justice League films, is that Zack Synder will direct BOTH of them. Find it interesting that from the meeting, they’ve confirmed that Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Amy Adams will reprise their roles in the ‘Part One’ Justice League, but didn’t confirm them for Justice League: Part Two.
The Flash (2018)
Not only was The Flash film announcement the only bit of news to come from the project, they only came out and announced who would be portraying the big screen Barry Allen, which is We Need To Talk About Kevin/The Perks of Being A Wallflower actor Ezra Miller. It’ll be interesting to see how DC/Warner Bros can portray the character on the big screen, as right now The Flash on the CW is killing it after just two episode and Grant Austin is knocking it out of the park playing Barry Allen/The Flash.
Aquaman has been long talked about, from getting screenwriters to work on separate scripts for the film, to the worst kept secret in the world FINALLY being confirmed from Jason Momoa himself that he shall be playing Arthur aka Aquaman. Has long been the brunt of many jokes about his character throughout the decades and considering that the last attempt of a big screen outing was done in the ‘Entourage’ world, I am looking forward to Momoa playing the King of Atlantis that will hopefully follow the Aquaman I’ve come to know and like from The Flashpoint Paradox onwards. You know what I mean? BadASS!
The only bit of information we have about the Shazam film is that 1) The Rock is Black Adam and 2) New Line are working on the film which is to be separate from the Justice League universe. The only issue I have with this is the who will Dwayne Johnson play ‘Shazam or Black Adam’ saga went on for a long time, to now say we have to wait FIVE years to see this Shazam film? I’m buying that Shazam won’t appear in the universe, yet, but Black Adam? I can definitely see a cameo somewhere here before the Shazam outing.
Back in April it was announced that Ray Fisher was cast as Cyborg aka Victor Stone and now is set to get his solo film in 2020. I like the Cyborg character, this half man/half machine and seeing how he tries to overcome being part machine
A brief synopsis of Cyborg in the DC Comics to give you an idea incase you don’t know:
Cyborg, also known as Victor Stone, is a superhero who is half man and half machine. His body was destroyed in a tragic accident, but he was saved through experimental technology; his body parts have been replaced with a large arsenal of high-tech gadgets and weaponry, while constantly providing life support. Stone struggles with his humanity as a machine, although his advancements have made him an unstoppable powerhouse.
Green Lantern (2020)
At long last, Hal Jordan, the poor bastard, is getting the reboot treatment it deserves. Sure the film wasn’t completely terrible (Ryan Reynolds was a good Hal, in my opinion), it was definitely a missed opportunity with the amount of source material and folklore on offer. I think it’s safe to assume that Reynolds won’t be returning for the role, hell, should we even jump to the conclusion that it’s Hal Jordan that’ll return for the big screen reboot? Maybe John Stewart will be the one this time? Regardless, I’m well on board for seeing the Green Lantern Corps again on the big screen.
So that’s everything covered from Warner Bros on the DC film slates for the next 5 years ahead, plenty to discuss and speculate on.
